Starting to think Military
Permalink

H'm, we are slowly building up recruits for the Carta Bellamarina. One thing I am keen on doing is a military unit as part of the Carta Bellamarina's interests.

Somebody who we may have recruited asked me about uniforms on FaceBook today, and I had a little think about this and wanted to float some opinions and ask for some in return.

I think a military unit in uniform, or at least having some matching kit, looks good. I would also want to keep the amount that people have to pay to buy in to a group down to a minimum, but still have good looking kit.

With this in mind, I've done a trawl through the League Board (and one other board) for a couple of useful links to sites which had well priced kit which I thought could make for a good uniform look for the Bellamarina Military.

These are to follow...

Personally I like the blue one with the white flashes, which looks pretty classy to me. At 39euros, that's about £30 odd, which isn't too bad a price in my opinion.

I think what would go well with this top would be a pair of slashed britches, hose or trousers, in either light grey or white, but I have yet to source a pair that either fit the brief or which could be modified.

I have also found these gambesons at a reasonable price, which I think would suit the League look (as they don't include the arms and would therefore allow puffy sleeves to show).

The 'Arthur' is a £45.00 sleeveless diamond patterned gambeson in either brown or black. Velvet Glove also apparently is very reliable stuff and if it does go wrong, then they have good customer service.

Accessorise with a hat with plumes and ribbons, sashes and bows. what do people think?

I now have an idea for trousers, but it does involve me popping up to Birmingham and visiting the Rag Market. There is a store that sells ex-rental chef's whites, amongst other workwear, and I have bought white trousers from there for LARP for years. You may have seen them on Riddle occasionally, the smart pair with the front seams sewn in that He wore for formal (!) occasions. I've worn the same style of trousers for other military characters before, and they really look the business.

I don't think that particular style will be appropriate for Empire, but they may do some drawstring chef's trousers which at £5.00, can be hacked about to create more IC britches, particularly with the slashes which are so in vogue with the League. I'm wondering whether a rather striking black and white check pattern might be appropriate (a bit of a John Blanche look). We'd certainly be striking.

I've done a bit of checking about on Ebay and can fairly confidently say that the cheapest metal armour I can find is provided by http://stores.ebay.co.uk/antiquesmedievalcollectibles

There are a number of sallets, back and breast plates and gauntlets in plate, which are actually under £50.00 per item, and in some cases, under £40.00 including postage (postage is steep on some items which are cheep, but postage is free on some of the other items even when they are identical. You will need to check and see which is more economical, cheap item with expensive postage or expensive item with cheap postage - it's not always obvious)

I've just checked the Velvet Glove website, and they have the same Landsknecht shirts as Mytholon, but at £23.00. Much much more reasonable.

http://www.velvet-glove.co.uk/index.php?page=5.

You could order the shirt and/or the gambeson and have it delivered to site as Velvet Glove will be trading there. Save on postage.

In view of the new 'Mercenary Banner' item coming up, are we going to try and get ourselves a banner?

So did I, so did I. I'll see what I can find.

Not quite what I was after, but a useful linkie as the black and white vertical stripy leggings are very similar to what I have picked up for my character. They will need a codpiece sewing on, though.

Handy, as they're in our colours.

Pricy.
